Donations & Sponsorships

The Birmingham African American Genealogy Group, Inc. is a service organization staffed by volunteers devoted to expanding Black Family Genealogy and Research.
Our goals and mission are:
  • Teach correct genealogical standards as promoted by the Board for Certification of Genealogists as to best methods and practices.
  • Promote family genealogy and research on local, state, and national platforms.
  • Encourage families to collect family stories in personal one-on-one interviews and research public and private documents when assembling one's family history.
  • Conduct monthly meetings teaching and demonstrating how to research family genealogy through gathering family knowledge and how to search public records collecting important family information. This is done in-person and on ZOOM.
  • Community Outreach - Each year in February, we celebrate Black culture and family history with THE BLACK HERITAGE FAIR.  An array of genealogy and fair theme exhibits, and speakers educate and entertain participants.
  • Community Outreach - We are available for Family Genealogy and Research workshops and speaking assignments, such as at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute each June and promoting events at the Birmingham Public Library.
As much as we enjoy family research and genealogy, there are other areas of responsibility that require funding.  Membership fees only cover part of our budget. Donations allow us to serve our community and programs more fully and allow room for growth. Below are 4 areas where funds are needed.
$ 1,750 - Website Maintenance - We have monthly and yearly website charges for maintenance and design. Expenses include editing, images, photography, domain name renewal, content management system upkeep and maintenance, hosting, coding, and security updates. These services provide you with the tools you see and use on this website.
$ 2,000 - John L. Lanier Scholarship Fund - Every spring, BAAGG awards $500 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Birmingham Area. We service the fund through membership fees and donations. We would like to increase the scholarship amount given to support the students' increasing cost of books and other fees.
$ 3,000 - 2025 Black Heritage Fair - This popular activity attracts 150-200 people.  We expect a larger crowd for the upcoming 2025 Fair which celebrates our 26th anniversary. Anticipating larger attendance increases our expenses specifically in the areas of refreshments, printing (Fair materials, flyers and programs), advertising and speaker honorariums. Individual donations and business/corporate sponsorships are essential funding for this event.

$ 2,000 - General Operations Fund - Most of our operating funds come from organizational membership fees. Our normal expenses include monthly ZOOM fees, advertisement, printing, and yearly fees to the Birmingham Public Library for our monthly meeting space.
